IX Seminar on

The IX Seminar on Applied Statistics of IASI took place in the facilities of the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), in Rio de Janeiro, from 7 to 10 July 2003. The themes chosen for this Seminar were "Statistics in Education and Education in Statistics".

This seminar provided an excellent opportunity for exchange of ideas, dissemination of recent work and developments that took place in Brazil and the Americas over the last few years, together with discussion of perspectives for advancement of both areas in the future. It had wide participation from researchers, university teachers, and professionals who have an interest in the themes of the seminar from Brazil and other countries, as well as students (graduate and undergraduate) and high school teachers.

The local Executive Committee in Rio de Janeiro was chaired by the General Coordinator, Prof. Ruben Klein (Fundação Cesgranrio-Brazil), and composed by Pedro Silva (ENCE/IBGE and First Vice President of IASI), Kaizô Iwakami Beltrão (ENCE/IBGE), and Prof. Paulo Cesar Pinto Carvalho (IMPA). This committee was in charge of all local administration of the seminar, as well as the implementation of the strategic decisions taken by the International Program Committee. This Program Committee was composed, in addition to the four indicated names, by Wilton Bussab (FGV/SP), José Francisco Soares (UFMG), Dalton Andrade (UFSC), Lisbeth Cordani (CEUN-IMT/USP), Martha Bilotti Aliaga (University of Michigan), Guido Del Pino (PUC, Chile), Carmen Batanero (Universidad de Granada, Spain, and currently president of IASE), Ita Kreft (College of Health and Human Services, CalStateLA), and Juan Enrique Froemel (LLECE, OREALC-UNESCO).

The Seminar had a variety of activities, including four short courses, a workshop, four plenary conferences, ten invited conferences, four round-tables, twenty oral communications, and twenty five papers presented in the posters' session. The papers accepted for oral presentation and the abstracts for the papers presented in the posters' session were included in a CD distributed to the participants. The invited speakers included researchers well-known at the national and international levels, providing the event with visibility and academic excellence. The Seminar, promoted by IASI, was also supported by the Brazilian Statistical Association (Associação Brasileira de Estatística - ABE), the Fundação Cesgranrio, IBGE, IMPA, INEP/MEC and OREALC-UNESCO, and counted with financial help from CNPq and CAPES. We thank all of those who contributed to the holding of this event, specially to ABE, the Fundação Cesgranrio and IBGE for the secretarial as well as financial support; to IMPA for the use of its facilities; to MEC/INEP, and to OREALC-UNESCO. We also thank the support from CNPq and CAPES. Unfortunately, part of the support was only received after the holding of the event, which prevented us from securing simultaneous interpretation, as it was initially considered, as well as the assignment of financial help for participants from other States, reason why some of them had to cancel their participation. In spite of that, the participation was good enough in terms of coverage, with 36 participants from abroad (Argentina 5, Canada 2, Chile 8, Colombia 1, France 1, England 2, New Zealand 1, Peru 2, Spain 5, United States 8, and Uruguay 1), and 130 from different States of Brazil (Amapá 2, Bahia 5, Distrito Federal 21, Ceará 1, Goiás 1, Minas Gerais 18, Paraíba 1, Paraná 3, Rio de Janeiro 45, Rio Grande do Sul 2, Santa Catarina 2, São Paulo 29).
