World Statistics Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010 to recognize the importance of Statistics in shaping our societies. As ONU indicates, the celebration of national and regional statistics days was already a tradition in more than 100 countries, but the adoption of this international day, October 20, by the General Assembly, brought a new light to this important celebration. The First World Statistics Day was commemorated on October 20, 2010 in more than 130 countries and areas. The celebration takes place every five years.
The Inter-American Statistical Institute (IASI) jointly with the Colombian Statistical Society (SCE) and the School of Statistics of the Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia celebrated World Statistics Day. Being this year an atypical year, which was framed in the worldwide fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the sectors of the economy, the three organizing institutions of the event agreed that the central theme of the event should be "Statistics and Covid-19"
The event held virtually on October 20 and 21, 2020 and on each scheduled days, there were three conferences related to statistics and its application to the study or obtaining information on Covid-19. At the end of the conferences, on the two scheduled days, between 12:00 and 17:30, a poster session was opened. The objective was to spread the research is being carried out in Covid-19. The posters in digital form, were hosted on a website where attendees could enter, view the documents, and direct the comments or concerns to the authors.
